Jon Aldinger, Mark Huot, and Dan Mall present swfIR: swf Image Replacement, which uses Flash, DOM Scripting, and semantic X/HTML to manipulate static images. I love stuff like this that shows Flash and web standards can work wonderfully together. Be sure to check out Dan's A List Apart article as well.

Debug Flash with Firebug

Aaron Bassett has written an Actionscript class that writes debug information out to Firebug's console. He's calling it flashBug and it's definitely worth checking out if you're tired of using trace(). Now, the question is, how long before Adobe comes after him demanding he change the name to swfBug? :P

Geoff Stearns and Bobby van der Sluis join forces to create one Flash embed method to rule them all. Check out the dev site for SWFFix and the A List Apart article introducing SWFFix.

SWFUpload adds the advantages of uploading files with Flash to your web applications. It has many advantages over standard XHTML forms and degrades gracefully to a normal html upload form if Flash or javascript isn't available. Definitely worth checking out.

The Flash Switcher Firefox Extension comes with all the currently published Flash Player plugins (from the version 2 to 9,0,16) and allows you to easily switch from one version to another, or also to remove the currently installed version. You can manually add additional versions of the Flash Player as well.

Adobe announced today that it will be contributing source code from the ActionScript Virtual Machine 2 (the ActionScript 3.0 Flash Player Scripting Engine introduced with Flash Player 9) to a new open source project, called Tamarin.

The Tamarin virtual machine will be implementing the final version of the ECMAScript Edition 4 (ES4) language specification.

In addition to driving the Adobe ActionScript Virtual Machine in Flash Player, Tamarin will be used in the next generation of SpiderMonkey, the core JavaScript engine in Firefox.

Zamzar File Conversion

Zamzar is a new free online file conversion service, including videos (AVI, GVI, MP4, MPG) to FLV. I tested out a .mov to .flv conversion today and it works great. You simply upload your file, and they email you the link to download the converted file once it's ready. The converted file is stored for 24 hours from the time you receive your email from Zamzar.

In addition to Video, they also convert Documents, Images, and Music to a wide variety of formats. I haven't tested the other conversions yet, but ones worth noting are .doc to .html, .ppt to .pdf, and .xls to .xml. You can view the complete list of conversion file formats on their website.
