From Geoff's Comment on Express Install Scripts:

I updated my FlashObject script to support the Express Install, and also included a new ExpressInstall class that makes implementing the Express Install much easier.

Please note that Flash Player 8 is still in beta, so you may not want to deploy this solution to your websites just yet.

Along with the announcement of Studio 8, Macromedia also rolled out their new Flash Detection Kit. Geoff Stearns' FlashObject is still the best Flash detection out there, but the best feature of the kit is the Flash Player Express Install sample files included with it. Express install allows you to enable detection of the end user's Flash Player version, initate a player-based secure installation, and return the user to your site to view your content. Express Install requires that the user has Flash Player 6.0r65 or later installed on Mac OS or Windows.

Additionally, the code contains a useful way to prevent the caching of SWF files. It creates a variable named "cacheBuster" and assigns a random number to it. Then, when it loads the .swf movie, it appends a "?" and the cacheBuster number to the end of the URL. So everytime the loadMovie is called, the browser is tricked into thinking it is a different .swf file.

The Macromedia Store is now accepting pre-orders for Flash Professional 8 and Macromedia Studio 8. For only $100 more, Studio 8 contains not only Flash Professional 8, but also Dreamweaver 8, Fireworks 8, Contribute 3, FlashPaper 2, HomeSite + and ColdFusion MX 7 Developer Edition.

Links you'll want to check out related to the Studio 8 release:

The Designer and Developer Seminars are being held in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, McLean, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, and Washington DC... but the Washington DC one is tagged as "Government Only"... what's up with that?

MochiBot is a new service that allows you to track your SWFs across multiple domains by simply signing up for a free account and than adding a few lines of Actionscript code to your FLA. This allows you to not only track how popular your Flash content is on your server, but also on other people's websites who are hosting your SWF (with or without your permission).

Geoff Stearns is asking for feedback on FlashObject as he develops the next release.

Additionally, Bobby van der Sluis has released Unobtrusive Flash Objects v1.0. UFO is a new Flash-detection script based on Geoff Stearns' FlashObject with some improvements, such as build version detection (a.k.a. sub or minor version detection).

Update (7-25-05): Geoff has updated FlashObject to version 1.2, which includes support for build version detection, as well as other improvements. FlashObject also has its own homepage now, complete with docs and examples. Personally, I'm going to continue to stick with Geoff's FlashObject over UFO because UFO doesn't load the Flash content until the page has loaded.

Macromedia released the public beta of the next version of the Flash Player (Flash Player 8, code named "Maelstrom") this morning. As promised, there is improved performance, but as in the case with any beta release, there most certainly will be bugs.

If you find any bugs with installation or with backwards compatibility with your current SWFs, report them to Macromedia.
